Zendesk's Advanced Data Privacy and Protection add-on, and an alternative that runs inside Support

Disclosure first: we make Data Custodian, one of the alternatives below. The facts about the add-on come from Zendesk's own documentation and pricing pages as of September 2026; check them before deciding, because both products change.

What the add-on covers

Advanced Data Privacy and Protection (ADPP) is a paid add-on for Zendesk Suite and Support plans, sold per agent on top of the plan. Zendesk lists these capabilities: deletion schedules that remove tickets on a policy, redaction suggestions and a redaction workflow inside the ticket, data masking for agents who should not see certain fields, an access log of who viewed what, and additional encryption options. It is built into the product, respects roles and permissions natively, and is the right tool for organisations that need agent-level masking or an access log across the whole account.

Where teams look for an alternative

  • Per-agent pricing. A 40-agent team pays for 40 seats of a capability two admins use a few times a month. Data hygiene and privacy work is done by a handful of people.
  • Bulk work. Answering an erasure request means finding every ticket a person requested or was copied on, redacting their data in every comment and attachment, anonymising the profile and keeping proof. Deleting last year's closed tickets means a dry run, a cap and evidence. The add-on's workflow is per ticket or per schedule.
  • Exports with comments and exact counts. Zendesk's search stops at 1,000 results and its export does not carry comments as rows. Auditors and legal teams ask for both.
  • Evidence. A record of who deleted or redacted what, when, with which criteria, that can be handed to an auditor as a file.

What Data Custodian does instead

Data Custodian is an app in the Zendesk Marketplace that runs entirely inside Zendesk Support, in the admin's browser, with the admin's own session. It has no server: nothing is copied out of the account. Priced per account, not per agent.

When to choose which

Choose the add-on if you need agents to be unable to see certain data (masking) or an access log of views, or if your compliance framework requires the capability to be a Zendesk product feature rather than an app.

Choose Data Custodian if the work is done by admins, in bulk, and you need exact-count search, exports with comments, bulk changes with undo, redaction with a preview, DSAR packs, retention with a dry run and evidence you can hand over, at a per-account price. Many accounts use both: the add-on for masking, the app for the bulk work.

Try it without installing

The demo runs the real app against a simulated account with three years of tickets, personal data in comments and attachments; every module works, nothing is real. The Marketplace listing link is added here once the listing is approved.
